Initial Psychiatric Evaluation

An initial psychiatric evaluation is the first step toward understanding your child or adolescent’s mental health needs and developing an individualized treatment plan. During this comprehensive evaluation, our board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) takes the time to understand the whole person—not just the symptoms.

The evaluation includes a thorough review of your child’s current concerns, mental health and medical history, developmental history, family and social history, school functioning, medications, and previous treatment. We also consider the impact of stress, trauma, relationships, and other factors that may be affecting emotional and behavioral well-being.

Following the evaluation, we will discuss our clinical impressions and recommendations with you and, when appropriate, your child. Treatment recommendations may include psychotherapy, psychiatric medication management, lifestyle or behavioral strategies, coordination with other providers, or a combination of approaches.

Our goal is to create a safe, supportive environment where children, adolescents, and their families feel heard, respected, and actively involved in their care.

Medication Management

Medication management follow-up appointments for children and adolescents focus on monitoring symptoms, treatment progress, and response to psychiatric medications to ensure care remains safe, effective, and developmentally appropriate. During each visit, we assess changes in symptoms, medication effectiveness, potential side effects, daily functioning, school performance, sleep, appetite, and other factors that may impact your child’s mental health and well-being.

When appropriate, medication adjustments may be made to optimize treatment and minimize side effects. We provide education and guidance to help children, adolescents, and their parents or caregivers understand the benefits, risks, and goals of treatment and feel informed and involved in the decision-making process.

Our goal is to provide thoughtful, evidence-based, trauma-informed medication management that is individualized to each child or adolescent and responsive to their unique developmental needs, strengths, and circumstances.

Therapy & Therapeutic Support

Follow-up appointments provide an opportunity to monitor your child or adolescent’s progress, assess how medications are working, and make adjustments when needed. Our board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) takes a collaborative, holistic approach to care, considering symptoms, development, daily functioning, school performance, relationships, side effects, and other factors that may influence mental health and well-being.

When appropriate, therapy may be incorporated into the same appointment to provide additional support and address emotional, behavioral, or situational concerns. This integrated approach allows medication management and therapeutic support to work together as part of an individualized treatment plan, while providing an opportunity for parents and caregivers to be involved in their child’s care.

Our goal is to provide thoughtful, evidence-based, trauma-informed care that evolves with your child or adolescent’s changing needs and supports healthy development, emotional well-being, and lasting stability.
